Christmas Comes Early at Southern Treasures

First, it was a booth at a flea market, then came Southern Treasures, followed by Wine a Little; now a new Christmas Room awaits visitors at 719 Durham Road in Roxboro. Bettie Yarboro-Jackson has dedicated the room adjoining Wine a Little to a Christmas theme. You can travel back in time and see elements from a Colonial Christmas to a Victorian Christmas with a touch of the eclectic along the way. But before I tell you more about the room, I want to share a bit of the back story.

Back Story

Christmas Comes Early at Southern Treasures

To meet the deadline for this story in mid-October, I stopped by Southern Treasures on the last Saturday afternoon in September. The notorious procrastinator that I am, I was congratulating myself on not waiting until the very last minute to gather pictures and information for this story. Two very nice ladies (but what would I expect from Bettie except the very best in employees for her very best in everything store) welcomed me warmly. I introduced myself and told them I was there to see the Christmas Room and take pictures for an upcoming story. They exchanged rather puzzled looks and explained that the room was still in the planning stages, but they would be happy to show me the area that would become the Christmas Room and share some ideas of what might be found there. Now, it was my turn to have a puzzled look. How could I write about something that hadn’t fully been planned out yet for a space that was currently filled with odds and ends of antiques? How could the story entice people to visit without pretty pictures and descriptive adjectives of what was there? Fast forward to the day of the deadline…

About the Room

Many styles, periods, and colors blend into a wonderful Christmas experience when I stepped through the doorway into the Christmas Room. One of the first things visitors will notice is mirrors along the walls. Some are parts of furniture such as dressers, and some are simply mirrors, but they all reflect the parts of the room. There are comfortable Victorian chairs by a fireplace warmed by an old-fashioned radiator. A toy train meanders its way across the top of a dresser under a forest of two tin trees. Santas from many periods and nations adorn the surfaces and some peek out from the center of wreaths with bows made from crinkly gold ribbon. There is even a Santa in a box and one adorning the top of a beautiful old box accompanied by man’s best friend. There are red glass plates, brightly wrapped packages, and evergreens with shiny red apples for ornaments. The room has a bit of everything, but it all comes together to make a most delightful place to visit.

But I didn’t expect anything less. Every time I visit Southern Treasures I am delighted by the selections, from crystal to pewter to china, tables and chairs, pieces of art, and indoor and outdoor décor for the home and garden. And of course, a wide selection of great wines. But most of all I am delighted to visit Bettie, Betty, Kaye, and now Bella, Bettie’s new baby. Don’t wait till Christmas to visit them and be sure to set aside enough time to explore the entire store and enjoy a glass of wine.
